Meet the A-EFFort Team
Dr Manolis Georgoulis, A-EFFort Project Manager
Manolis Georgoulis
Dr M. K. Georgoulis is a Senior Scientist at the Research Center of Astronomy and Applied Mathematics (RCAAM) of the Academy of Athens. A solar physicist by education, his interests span from solar magnetism to eruptive phenomena and the complexity of energy release in the solar atmosphere, to space-weather forecasting. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics (1993) from the University of Thessaloniki and a PhD in solar plasma physics (2000) from the same institution.
He served as PostDoctoral Research Associate at the Space Department of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) in Maryland, USA (2000 - 2003) and as Senior Professional Staff Physicist at JHU/APL (2003 – 2009). He was elected as an Associate Researcher at RCAAM in 2009 and as a Senior Researcher in 2012.
The solar-flare forecasting method used in the A-EFFort project was originally published by M. K. Georgoulis & D. Rust, ApJ, 2007 and refined in follow-up works. He is also actively involved in national and international flare-forecasting working groups and he is currently leading or participating in other relevant projects funded by the Greek GSRT, ESA, the European Commission, NASA, and ISSI.
